About

The Story Behind Beyond the Surface

Beyond the Surface is a Chicago based design podcast founded by Alex Sanchez and Caleb Kwok in March 2023 while they were architecture students. As a first-generation college student, Alex often found it difficult to envision her own career path in the field. Together, she and Caleb set out to explore the stories of architects beyond their work—uncovering their journeys, values, and visions for the future.

Beyond the Surface focuses on stories from designers to uncover who they are beyond the surface. The podcast is a platform for meaningful conversations that spark innovation, challenge assumptions, and open new ways of thinking about the future of design. It serves as a space where listeners can learn from the personal experiences of designers and be inspired to grow in their own paths.
